Motorists were using two remaining lanes and advised to take the adjacent frontage road instead.Īccording to the HPD, the drone is flown over the length of the section of the Rama II Road over the Samae Dam area of Bang Khunthian district of Bangkok and the connecting area of tambon Pan Tai Norasing in Muang district of Samut Sakhon. The congestion had been caused by at least one lane of the road being closed for resurfacing for 40 days. In recent days, the clips from the drone pinpointed a severe traffic bottleneck between kilometre markers 18 and 19 in the outbound direction. The drone is capable of taking the clips over a seven-kilometre radius of the road, which are then downloaded on the HPD Facebook for motorists to access. The clips enable the police to respond to traffic situations faster and more effectively, he said. They prove useful in helping police manage and direct traffic in areas with heavy build-ups of vehicles. Video clips of traffic movements from the drones are transmitted on a real-time basis to the police officers' mobile phones. The drone assists police on the ground in getting a bird's eye view of the traffic situation, especially during peak hours in the morning and afternoon, said Pol Maj Gen Chat Sukkaewnarong, the HPD commander. (Photo by Chanat Katanyu)Ī drone is being deployed to help ease heavy congestion on Rama II Road, the Highway Police Division (HPD) says. (For those on the motorway, this meant that the police ordered them to drive the wrong way on a motorway carriage.) That was 'gridlock.A drone is being deployed to help ease heavy congestion on Rama II Road. The result was chaos for eight hours and finally motorists at the end of both jams were ordered to turn around and return to where they had originated. The motorway and slip-roads to and from the motorway filled up in both directions as did the alternative road. If I recall correctly, about seven years ago, there was an accident on the M25 motorway and, simultaneously, an accident on the only alternative road, which was a narrow road. As this is unlikely, the word never quite reaches that meaning in the UK and is used to express a very large traffic jam over a large area in which traffic from all directions is halted for a very long time.Ī traffic jam is where, eventually, vehicles (mainly from one or two directions) will be able to move forward although an extended period of waiting is necessary. To me, gridlock is where the only solution to the inability of a vehicle to move is that the vehicles has to travel in reverse gear and find an alternative route. I don't object to 'gridlock' for which the Brits never had a word as the situation never arose. Who doesn't support the definition above, it's just an error by clueless script writers.(You can't have gridlock if there's no grid, i.e. Or, it could simply be that traffic exceeds the capacity of any given highway.ĭon't capitalize "gridlock." It's not a proper noun. It's obvious, or at least it should be, that traffic jams can result from many more situations than stupid people filling intersections so that nobody can move, e.g. In New York City, there are signs warning "Don't block the box." I seem to remember that there are special penalties for those who ignore the warning. obstruction of urban traffic caused by queues of vehicles forming across junctions and causing further queues to form in the intersecting streets. You could start with the dictionary here, since there's a fair amount of misinformation above.Ĭollins Concise English Dictionary © HarperCollins Publishers:: Even when discussing an abusive word it is OK if no specific names are mentioned. Forums are for learners who need to know words. I do not know precisely whether such things are prohibited or not in this forum, but logic and reasoning suggest to me that they are not. Though you say some words are offensive, please give them here and explain what they mean. Such things have now also become typical of St.Petersburg whose streets, if seen from above, have a similar structure reminding one of a grid. I remember, in one film, a driver who jumped out of his car and started swearing and wrangling with another driver because though the traffic lights had changed the driver being insulted did not move because there was a huge jam in front of him, which the first driver had not seen because he had been sitting in his car. Well, they really do not have to be created there because just after taking a look at the layout of American cities is enough to understand what you are talking about. I am trying to remember American movies especially those shot in New York or Los Angeles.
